As I've mentioned in the past, I often Google topics to find a title for one of my pieces, or for information when writing a post.  Today I googled "cow poems".  I had "A Child's Garden Of Verses" by Robert Louis  Stevenson when I was a child, so when I saw this poem I thought it fit!

Stevenson, Robert Louis (1850–1894).  A Child’s Garden of Verses and Underwoods.  1913.

24. The Cow
THE FRIENDLY cow all red and white
I love with all my heart:
She gives me cream with all her might,
  To eat with apple-tart.

She wanders lowing here and there,         5
  And yet she cannot stray,
All in the pleasant open air,
  The pleasant light of day;

And blown by all the winds that pass
And wet with all the showers,  10
She walks among the meadow grass
  And eats the meadow flowers.

Some interesting sheep facts:

White House woolies
President Woodrow Wilson grazed sheep on the White House South Lawn. The wool obtained from the sheep was sold to raise money for the Red Cross during World War I. The flock included "Old Ike," a tobacco-chewing ram.

OK, I know that this buffalo is not a gal, but the title seemed to work.  And, yes, I did Google the song and read all the words.  If I ever paint a woman w/ feet as big as the sidewalk, I already have my title chosen!

Here are a few more Poinsettia facts that I googled:

  • Poinsettias are priced according to the number of blooms. The more blooms, the more expensive the plant.
  • The flowers or cyathia of the poinsettia are in the center of the colorful bracts.
  • Poinsettias have been called the lobster flower and flame leaf flower.
  • Poinsettias are not poisonous.
  • A study at Ohio State University showed that a 50 pound child who ate 500 bracts might have a slight tummy ache.
  • Poinsettia sap that can irritate the skin and cause an upset stomach if consumed in large enough quantities.
  • A fresh poinsettia is one on which little or no yellow pollen is showing on the flower clusters in the center of the bracts. Plants that have shed their pollen will soon drop their colorful bracts.
  • Poinsettias represent over 85 percent of the potted plant sales during the holiday season.

Many artists are painting holiday themed pieces, as am I.  When I saw several other poinsettias I thought that the reds were so deep and strong.  I went back and looked at my still life set up.  My reds aren't deep because my poinsettia is a very cad red one.  Not an alizaron one.  Next year I'm going to get some in alizaron!

His Lonesome Cattle Call

His Lonesome Cattle Call

HOLIDAY SALE  All paintings sold in December are 20% off my regular prices

This is from a fall trip my husband and I took over to the Western Slope.  For those of you not from Colorado, the Western Slope is the name we call all of the mountains on the west side of the Continental Divide (which runs down the middle of the Rockies.)  This was about 6 hours from Colorado Springs.  We live on the Front Range.  That encompasses Fort Collins, Denver, Colo Springs, and Pueblo, or all of the towns on the range (you know, like home, home, on the range) on the eastern side of the Rockies.  Just a little geography lesson thrown in!

Anyway, we were out driving around on back roads and a herd of cattle came across a hill top.  So, I had to get out!  And then, this cowboy comes riding over the top of the hill.  What a perfect setting and scene!  Just meant to be a painting!

Sometimes when I'm looking for a title I use google to help me.  When I googled "song lyrics about cows" up came this song, Cattle Call, by Eddy Arnold, sung along w/ Lee Ann Rimes.  It seemed appropriate and provided a title.  I especially like the yodeling!

(LeAnn Rimes and Eddy Arnold)

LeAnn:
(yodeling)
The cattle are prowlin',
The coyotes are howlin'
Way out where the doggies roam
Where spurs are a jinglin'
And the cowboy is singing
His lonesome cattle call
(yodeling)

He rides in the sun
'Til his days work is done
And he rounds up the cattle each fall
(yodeling)
Singing his cattle call

Eddy:
For hours he would ride
On the range far and wide
When the night wind blows up and slow
His heart is a feather
In all kinds of weather
He sings his cattle call
(yodeling)

He's browned as a fairy
From ridin' the prairie
And he sings with an western drawl
Singing his cattle call

LeAnn and Eddy:
(yodeling)

I love the tradition of poinsettia plants around the holidays.  They add such color to the house.  Some interesting facts about poinsettias, complements of Wikipedia:

  • Poinsettias are native to Mexico.
  • The Aztecs called the poinsettia Cuetlaxochitl. They made a reddish purple dye from the bracts.
  • Chile and Peru called the poinsettia the "Crown of the Andes."
  • Poinsettias are part of the Euphorbiaceae family. Many plants in this family ooze a milky sap.
  • Some people may have skin irritation from the milky sap
  • In nature, poinsettias are perennial flowering shrubs that can grow to ten feet tall.
  • The showy colored parts of poinsettias that most people think are the flowers are actually colored bracts (modified leaves).
  • Poinsettias are priced according to the number of blooms. The more blooms, the more expensive the plant.
  • The flowers or cyathia of the poinsettia are in the center of the colorful bracts.

I might re-photo this.  There's more contrast in the reds than shows here.

This truck belongs to my friend Marianne's husband, Grant.  It sits on their ranch out behind the barn.  I've painted their chickens, eggs, garden chair, and now their truck.  I love the colors, I hope to paint this again! I think the 100th anniversary of Chevys commercial is so well done!
