Lunch With Liza Hirst in London

I just got back from a trip to London.  Our daughter works for Visa, a proud sponsor of the Olympics, so I went over to see her while she's there working for the Olympics and Paralympics.  I had a great time!

While there I got together for lunch with fellow blogger and artist Liza Hirst.  Liza and I have been blogosphere friends for several years and it was really wonderful to meet her in person!  Here we are after lunch having English tea!  If you're not familiar with her work go to her blog, you'll love what she paints.

Beautiful Morning

Beautiful Morning
9" x 12"  Oil
$145.00 + $10. s/h

This is the view from our kitchen deck, minus the fence around the back yard and shrinking the trees a bit.  I have painted this same scene many times; I did a whole series of this sunrise on small 5" x 7" panels.

And, some more flowers from one of the gardens in our back yard.  Our back yard is fenced, which allows us to garden.  The front yard is just a salad bar for the deer.

Colorado Aspen

Colorado Aspen
11" x 14"  Oil
$245.00 + $10. s/h

I love the color of the leaves of the Aspen tree in the summer.  It's a beautiful warm green.  In the fall the Aspen leaves turn a spectacular yellow/orange/green.
Aspens are all native to cold regions with cool summers ie: high altitudes.  Aspens grow in large colonies derived from a single seedling, and spread by means of root suckers.  New stems in the colony can appear at up to 90 to 100 feet from the parent tree.  So, when you see a grove of Aspen, they are all connected by the same root system.  I heard that once on Jeopardy, and knew the answer.  Actually, I heard the answer and knew the question.
Each tree can live for 40 - 150 years above ground, but the root system of the colony lives much longer.  In some cases for thousands of years.  There is a colony in Utah estimated to be 80,000 years old (I found that out in Wikepedia.)

Tree Shadows

Tree Shadows

I love the way the light and shadow plays on the path and trees.  The back lighting also drew me to this scene.
