This color study is of the "Spanish Skirts" which appear in the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon. This dark red oxidation is a combination of iron and oxygen.
Pam, I love your canyon series! The paintings are fabulous and more and more abstract! Such beautiful colors! Yes, they do remind me of Diebenkorn, also, one of my favorite artists. In case you didn't know, he is SF Bay Area artist, who also painted in New Mexico! I have several of his books. One of them, in particular, you would really like, is about his time painting in New Mexico. Have fun with your resarch! Again, your paintings are gorgeous!

Thank you so much Nancy, I value all your comments. I'm not that familiar w/ Diebenkorn. Hope the book I get has some of his New Mexico pieces.
