You're A Grand Old Flag

You're A Grand Old Flag

Last fall fellow Daily Painter Original blogger Karen Werner posted two incredible paintings, Old Glory and Old Glory 2.  They were my inspiration for this piece and I thought it appropriate for Veteran's Day.  Both of my parent's served in WWII, my dad was in the Army and my mom was a WASP.  My grandfather was in both WWI and WWII.

This painting is of the flag that was on my grandfather's grave when he passed away in 1964.  The flag went to my dad,  who later passed down to my son (who was given my grandfather's name as his middle name.)  We don't hang this flag outside, I should probably take it to the VFW and have them ceremoniously fold it.  I'm pleased how this piece turned out.  If I paint it again, I might try to make it look even a little more aged and faded.

"You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave."

It is beautiful, Pam. My parents were too young for WWII, my dad born in 1937, my mom in 1941. My dad did serve in the Army, however, but was too young for Korea and had already served his enlistment when Vietnam came around. I am thankful he didn't have to see war. My girls' dad, myself, my husband now all served in the military as well. I'm so proud of my service, even though I was only in 17 months (I was honorably discharged on a pregnancy option to separate). I love when Americans show their love of country.

Thank you Debbi! It's a little bit like you Uma paintings.

Marian, Thank you so much!

Thank you Sherry. It doesn't matter how long one serves, just that we love our country.

Nancy, Thanks so much. I loved painting this.

Thanks so much for the words Celeste.

Un bel et glorieux hommage à votre grand-père et pour l'ensemble de tout ceux qui ont combattu...

It's beautiful Pam. You did Old Glory proud!

R, thanks so much. The challenge was the stars...different values and different directions due to the folds.

Carol, thank you. Yes, a great thing about blogging we can be inspired by each other vicariously!

Merci Martine. Je ne peux pas imaginer combien difficile il doit avoir été pour ma grand-mère d'avoir à la fois son mari et son fils combattre outre-mer.

Thank you so much Carol. We should all be proud of what we have.

Thank you Samantha, I so love your word "heartfelt." It does describe this.

Lori, Thank you. It gives the affect even while cropped.

Thanks so much Dean. I knew that you would enjoy this piece!

Hilda, thank you so much. I think giving someone goose bumps is a good thing!

Thank you so much Cathyann.

What a wonderful painting, and a beautiful way to honor the day Pam.
Both my father and my father were in WWII, and I am so grateful for what they did to protect our country!

I really like the unique crop of this compositon and how you have glorified the flag and its meaning in this charming piece. Well done, Pam!

Pam, this is gorgeous, I think it turned out fantastic. I loved that your Mom was a WASP and wow your Grandfather was in both wars. Really great piece.

Susan, Thank you so much. Our flag speaks for itself, so even w/ lots of cropping it is so identifiable.

Thank you Amy. It is kind of neat that my parents and grandparents were so patriotic.
