Hillside of Poppies
Oil 9" x 12"
$195.00 + $10. s/h
SOLD
This is another piece from our March trip to California. I have my husband to thank for this one. We spent almost a week in Sonoma county, which, if you've never been, should be on every one's trip list! It's beautiful! Flowers were blooming every where. My husband saw this farm and pulled over for me to take a picture before I had even seen the poppies. He knows what makes a great painting! I love how the poppies created a natural movement into the piece and up and over to the barn.
I'm lucky that our daughter lives in San Francisco. It's a great excuse to head to that city as well as all of the gorgeous surrounding areas.

I painted this earlier this summer at The White House Ranch here in Colorado Springs. I never posted it! Anyway, the poppies were great this year, prolific bloomers all over town!

Tuscan Poppies
Tuscan Poppies
14 of 30
Oil 6" x 8"
Last May when we were in Tuscany, the poppies were in full bloom. Sometimes when driving in the country side whole fields were carpeted in reds. It was the perfect month to be there. These are from a field of poppies right at the edge of the entrance to our B&B outside of Florence.

100 Garden & Floral Oil Paintings, Original Artwork by a Colorado Daily Painter, 32/100
"Double Poppies"
6" x 8" oil on panel
$100.00 + $10. s/h
This week my plein air group painted in a beautiful garden. These poppies were growing in the middle of the vegetables. The home owner said that they'd reseeded themselves and he had no idea what they were. They looked to me like a hybrid of peonies and poppies as they had several rows of petals in the middle.

Rain Break
6" x 6" oil on canvas panel$75.00 + $10. s/h

I always feel like each summer it takes me several poppy paintings to get the dark and light oranges looking like dark and light orange and not red orange and yellow orange. But with all the rain we've had this month, our poppies are taking a beating and it's been cloudy or rainy for weeks. Today I went outside and painted in the cloudy weather, which is frustrating. But soon there won't be any poppies left. I guess if rain is the worst of my problems, I shouldn't complain. We're just not used to this weather here in Colorado.

Dark Orange
6" x 9" oil on canvas on foam board
While painting this poppy series, I constantly struggled with the "dark oranges." I was adding alizaron and getting a redder orange. But I didn't see the dark orange that way. Finally, I went outside my regular palette and used magenta, part of my extended palette. I like this color mixture much better. I guess the extended palette is kind of like the extended family: great to have.

Flanders Field
6 x 6 oil on canvas panelWhen I was in 5th grade, I had to memorize Flanders Field. I don't remember what we were studying, or why we had to memorize this poem. But, to this day, I have a visual image of the graveyard with poppies growing randomly and haphazardly; unlike the perfect rows and rows of crosses.
We have three areas of poppies in our gardens. They grow well and easily in Colorado; not all flowers do well at this altitude (6,000 feet here in Colorado Springs.) I love painting them, and have done so dozens of times. I just wish their blooming season was a little bit longer.
