This is the 7th painting in my Grasslands series.  While traveling through the Grasslands this past summer we found a restaurant tucked away in a very small town, Stoneham.  A book on the Grasslands was sitting near the entrance and the owner lent in to me.  I loved all of the adjectives and descriptors in the book and used many of them for the painting titles in this series.

I know we don't all read every blog that we see, so I'm repeating the interview & background about this series from the blogs that I posted the last few days:

A short while ago I received a phone call from a student at UNC, Greeley, Mina Jackson.  She is a freshman journalism major and wanted to interview about my paintings in the Grasslands Show.  Here is a link to the article she wrote:  Grasslands Article  I was so impressed with her preparation, she had 15 questions all ready to ask.  I think the article is well written for a first year student.  Thank you Mina!

A repeat from the first post of this series:

I recently participated in the "Grasslands Inspiration IV Show" in the Mari Michener Gallery at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, my alma mater.  The paintings for the show were to be of the 7 "grassland counties" in northeastern Colorado.  It had been years since I'd been to that part of Colorado.  So, my husband, always supportive of any thing art related that I want to do, and I spent two days driving around the back roads in that area taking 100s of photos and getting inspired by the grasslands.  Both of us had a great time and couldn't get over all of the different "grasses" and their many, varied colors!

Upon returning home I spent hours editing the photos, then sketching my favorite locations.  I did several dozen sketches before starting the paintings.  Originally I had planned on doing very large paintings, but due to time, most of the paintings were 12" x 12".  I ended up loving that size and painting 9 12 x12s as well as 2 larger paintings of the grasslands!  I was motivated by a new inspiration!

For the next 2 weeks I'll be posting grassland paintings.  Enjoy!

Dear Pam,
As you yourself suggested, we who contribute to and make use of this blog instrument seldom actually visit sites that we read to lewave a comment. Attribute that to whatever... I could not resist this opportunity to do so in regards to your "Grassland Series".

We share so many similarities in our personal background that I felt compelled to "pass forward" my own words of encouragement to you". Perhaps we might discuss those less than coincidence "parallel journeys" on another day... but that will be another part of the story... for another day.

The fact is, I feel that your series and the impetus for your commencing it and for propelling each painting into reality seem perhaps signs that you might consider to look at the project beyond the scope of the paintings alone.

Seems to me that the grassland "guts" of your paintings also reflects your own heritage and respect for it. "Best of Show" endorsement readily shows that others think so too.

Like you... I too am a traveller of sorts. But I keep being drawn back to my Eden to live... think and create. I am greatly blesssed. My Eden and I have a complexly intimate and hard to explain relationship

I am currently taking a hiatus from my own painting which is usually full time to begin recording... organizing my thoughts and writing a novel (of sorts) to describe my own miraculous (to me) journey. IT struck me that you might have arrived at the same place in your own travelling and painting lives.
Just a thought...

Good luck with your series... it's already a winner in my books. I will check in from time totime to keep abreast of your progress.

Good Painting!
Warm regards,
Bruce Sherman

Bruce,
Hi, omg! You made my day! As for getting together another day to discuss our parallels, I'm all for it! And, I think this grasslands series might make something else...a book, a short video, an interview of ranchers? Who knows. You've sent a little link to the back of my mind that I'm going to let stir a bit! Thank you!!
