I loved the way this cow just stared at me.  She kept her eye on me the whole time that I was watching her.  Kind of like a dare who could stare the longest.  I also loved how she stayed behind the chamisas!

I just mailed Lucy off to her home in North Carolina.  Lucy is a Miniature Black Angus.  I didn't know anything about Miniature Black Angus, so I googled it!  Interesting what you learn through painting.  Lucy's photo was hanging in my studio for several weeks and  during the painting process my husband and I became very attached to her and affectionately started calling the painting "Not For Dinner".   We couldn't imagine eating her!  She's so cute!  How could you commission a painting that would soon become dinner?  So, I emailed my husband's niece, whose family raises these, and asked her about this.  They use the females for breeding and the males for meat.  So, with a life expectancy of 12-25 years, Lucy will be a part of that family for years to come!

Other news....I have hardly posted this past month, because I haven't painted much this past month.  I recently had partial knee replacement.  I've had knee problems for decades and finally realized that it was time to fix this!  The last several weeks I've been recovering, going through at home physical therapy, laying around, watching netflix, hobbling around in a walker, taking naps...everything you do after knee surgery.  Painting and standing (or even sitting) in front of my easel just hasn't been possible.  I didn't have the physical or mental stamina.  Drugs take it out of you, and although I've been thinking that doing some abstract painting might be fun, I wasn't quite ready for drug induced abstract.  So, I'm on the mend, doing more each day, and am looking forward to painting again soon!

My last two paintings were of Texas cattle.  I thought I needed to do a painting from a little closer to home. This guy lives just a little bit west of our house.

I like the challenge of painting whites and grays (that's what the colors really are.)  This Texas day was filled with neutral color notes: the steer, the leafless shrubs in the background, the partly cloudy sky.

You can't go to Texas without seeing a lot of cattle.  I'm not sure what this kind was, it's not quite a Longhorn;  so, I gave it it's own name.  It seems like the cattle and cows that I see around here stand by the side of the road when you approach.  But, in Texas, every time we pulled over by the side of the road, the herds turned to look, then ran away.  Must be the old Texas/Colorado rivalry.  The didn't want to see me coming!

Cows really are cute. How can you not love them? They let you get pretty close before they walk away. And, I'm not sure if they walk away because of human presence or they're just looking for a little bit better bite to eat. This one really seems "moodest". She doesn't look vain, she seems humble. She's held back by a sense of what is fit and proper. She is not calling attention to her body. So, yes, she is moodest.

As I'm looking at this painting titled "Moonet", I'm wondering, is it a portrait, (maybe) a figure, (maybe) a still life, (definately not) a landscape (part of one). I guess animals fall into their own category, but what chapter in my painting books do I look in when looking for cow painting tips? I guess I'll just keep reading them all.

This guy just wasn't as interested in me as I was in him. Not sure why, must have been a really good clump of grass. The earth in the foreground is the gravel road. I'm right next to this one, and he still doesn't seem to care.

It's funny how cows, most animals actually, turn and look when we approach. I guess they're as interested in us as we are in them. This guy sure was interested in me. There are 83,000 dairy cows and 2.6 million head of cattle in Colorado. No wonder I see them everywhere. Nearly half of Colorado, or about 31 million acres is farmed or ranched. The cattle industry is the no. 1 agricultural commodity in the state.
