This painting was done partly plein air and partly in the studio.  With plein air paintings you have to paint quickly and not chase the light and shadows.  But, with all of these elipses the drawing part of the piece took quite a long time.  Consequently, the light and shadows (which I had blocked in) had changed so much after several hours that I knew I needed to stop.  I had taken a picture when I started, so I had my choice of being like Monet and going back to the same spot another day soon after, or heading home and finishing in my studio.  I chose the later.  Being like Monet will have to be another time.

I was working in the back yard this morning, raking and pulling out the dead annuals.  We have one last, lonely hollyhock happily blooming away.  I'm sure that it'll be gone by Wednesday as we're expecting possible snow and 19 degrees overnight on Tuesday.  We've had such a gorgeous fall;  I'm not looking forward to cold and snow.

Coreopsis

Right now our back yard is filled with coreopsis.  So, I decided it's a great time to paint yellows.  Yellow can be tricky.  Do you darken it with green and make it cool?  Do you darken it with orange and make it warm?  Do you use the complement, purple, and gray it a little?  I'll be posting coreopsis done in all of the above ways.  In this one, I mixed the cool yellow and brushed it on, one stroke, then a clean brush:  over and over.    I like the way it's kind of "stripey."

This is the back garden gate of the main ranch house at Triangle L Ranch and B&B in Oracle, Az.  When the ranch was homesteaded in the 1890's, or when it became a guest ranch in the 1920's, there may have been both a front formal garden as well as a back vegetable garden.
