Summer Hollyhocks

It's wonderful to be outside in the summer. I love the warmth, the light, the smells. We have lots of flowers in our backyard so the smells are fragrant. One of our flowers is the hollyhock. We have both white and pink. I think many people love hollyhocks because we are reminded of our youth, our parents and grandparents gardens. For the gardener hollyhocks add a lot to a garden as they can grow up to 9 feet. This adds a great vertical element to a yard.
However, hollyhocks are a short lived perennial. They only live 2 or 3 seasons. But, because they reseed themselves usually you will have hollyhocks every year. The south side of our yard didn't get many hollyhocks this year. I'm not sure why they didn't reseed. Next spring, just after our last frost I'll throw out some seeds from this years plants, and maybe add some fresh top soil.

Pink Hollyhocks
Pink Hollyhocks
Oil 16" x 8"

$395.00 + $20. s/h
I loved painting all of these hollyhocks. And, I love having them in our backyard. These long stretched canvases are perfect for hollyhock paintings!
Hollyhocks are easy to grow from seed. While they are a perennial, many only bloom bi-annually. It's a good idea to plant seeds 2 years in a row. That way you'll have them growing in your garden every year. Once they start growing it's easy to sow some of the plants' seeds in the fall. Also it's easy to save seeds over the winter and sow more in the spring.

This is the 2nd white hollyhock in this size. (See my last post.) There's one more to post, but in a another color.
We have hollyhocks growing in our backyard in several different locations. Many hollyhocks are bi-ennial (blossoming every other year.) Luckily we have enough that there are some blooming every year. Many times I save the seeds over the winter and throw them back into the ground in the spring. Some new sprouts regularly appear.
I photoed this over and over with 2 different cameras. There is just a bit more yellow in the flower than appears here. Will keep trying.

This is another floral done plein air in our backyard. I love going out (to the mountains or elsewhere in town) to paint, but oh, it's so easy when you can just walk out the back door and paint! My only problem with it is that I'll look down and see weeds in the garden or things growing in the grass that aren't grass and start weeding. Soon, I've been weeding away for 10-15 minutes and many weeds are gone, but my painting is waiting! Oh well, if that's my biggest problem in life I have a good life!

These hollyhocks are from our backyard. We've had so much rain this year, way more than normal for Colorado. The flowers and gardens are spectacular. I spent the last 2 days painting in gardens on a garden tour. It was fun and the gardens were amazing. More about that later.
I've photoed this over and over. The colors are just a bit off. I'll take a few more pictures and see if I can get it a bit more accurate.

Sunny Vista Living Center Juried Show
Friday night was the opening for the Sunny Vista Living Center Juried Show. It was a great event, especially for me. I had 3 pieces juried into the show. My plein air painting, "Backyard Hollyhocks", received 1st place in the oil/acrylic category and was purchased by Sunny Vista. My truck painting, "Hasn't Been Used In Awhile", sold. Sunny Vista does an amazing opening. Their chefs prepared a wonderful buffet dinner with appetizers, fruits, chocolate fountain dessert and more. Thank you to Sunny Vista, to the judge, to the person bought my painting. It all makes for a great Mother's Day weekend. Happy Mother's Day to all of you!

After the Rain

6" x 6" oil on panel
$75.00 + $10. s/h
contact me if interested
I had planned on painting another white hollyhock, but last night's torrential rain made them look so droopy and wilted. So, back to the pinks. The last pink one leaned a little toward magenta. I wanted this one to really be pink, so I used some Permanent Rose, which is not in my usual plein-aire palette, but which we used at Studio Incamminati. I think it was a good addition to my flower palette.

Early Morning Hollyhocks

SOLD
6" x 6" oil on panel
$75.00 + $10. s/h
contact me if interested
This morning I was up and out in the backyard early. I wasn't going to be deterred by too much sun. The sun was filtering in and out of the leaves which created cool light and shadow, as well as warm spots. A fun and challenging time of day. Although, plein-aire light is always fun, challenging, and constantly changing. I find this really makes me look, and quickly put down my color notes.

The hollyhocks in our yard are about 8 feet tall this year. They're incredible! I'm sure it has to do with all the rain we had this past spring. I didn't get out to paint quite as early this morning as I would have liked, so, to stand in the shade (I could have used my umbrella!) I was tucked in by our back gate. I had to keep opening the gate and go into the path to stand back. I just should have set-up out in the park easement!
