I'm thrilled to once again be in the 6" Squared Show at the Randy Higbee Gallery in Costa Mesa, California. The reception is this Saturday, April 16th. While I'm not able to attend the show, the video and pictures that I've seen of it look incredible!

I've mentioned before that I own eleven creamers.  I think this is only the fourth that I've posted.  

The opening of our show at Summerland Gardens went really well.  Many friends came and I met many new people.  Thanks to all who came.  The show will be up for awhile, so I hope you can visit.

Scenes from "International Women Celebrate!"

In a January post I wrote about my participation in the show "International Women Celebrate!"  click here.   I received an email from fellow blogger Nicki Ault, with pictures from the show in Ayr, Ontario.  I was thrilled to be able to get a glimpse of the exhibit.  My piece, Circle of Friends, is the lower left painting.

This is my submission for this weeks Daily Paintworks challenge.  The object was to take an object and paint it 8 times, but only spend 10 minutes on each painting.  I've been thinking about doing another tea party painting with a lemon on a plate.  So, it seemed like a good practice.  I was planning on putting the lemon wedge on a little white plate, but, I may rethink that as I think it looks better on a dark background.  Maybe that's two paintings in the planning!

International Women Celebrate!

I am thrilled to be a part of the upcoming show International Women Celebrate! at the AyrSpace Gallery in Ayr, Ontario, Canada.  The exhibit celebrates the centenary of International Women's Day and shows the work of over 100 women from around the world.  I painted "Circle Of Friends" in early December and am packing it up this week for shipping.

When thinking about what to paint for this event I kept thinking about women throughout history and women around the globe sharing stories, sharing their lives, sharing tea.  How this sharing often is, or was, around a table, around a fire, in a sewing circle, in a group, but, with a circle of friends.  The show opens in early March and lasts five weeks.  If you're going to be in Ayr, Ontario I hope you'll attend.  Part of the proceeds from the sale of the paintings will go to orphans in Haiti.

This creamer was a little bit of a challenge, as there is a dog climbing up the handle and men, horses and hounds in relief walking around the body.  I chose to more or less leave them out and just suggest shapes.  

I recently won a calendar of Kim VanDerHoek's paintings.  It arrived today!  I was so excited to win this and am so thrilled to have received it.  I met Kim threw blogging.  If you aren't familiar with her work, it is beautiful, go to her website, blog, or facebook site.

In searching through cabinets, shelves and boxes for pieces of china to paint, or should I say reflections to paint,  I realized that I have eleven creamers.  Not sure why I have so many, or where they all came from, or where the sugar bowls are, but nevertheless, that's at least eleven daily paintings.  So, look for more.

I had so much fun painting the last two pieces, that I've put them together in a larger painting.  White china on wood creates such strong reflections.  I'm going to have to paint these again.

I think that this is such a sweet set.  It belonged to one of my grandmothers.  But, at this point I don't even know which one, and there's no one left to ask.  I enjoyed painting these two small pieces so much that now I'm working on a bigger version.

I guess I'm on a reflection roll.  I loved the reflections on the tea cup that I painted earlier in the month.  And, I've really had fun painting all the reflections in the recent river pieces.  The reflections of china on wood are equally as beautiful.

This is the creamer from our daughter's teaset which was my mother-in-law's. I spent almost as much time setting this up as I did painting it. When I painted one of the teacups (2 weeks ago) I had it on an older green placemat. So, now I wanted it on a different, warmer, background. I thought of what our daughter played with it on...a garage sale plastic table covered in flowered contact paper. That wasn't quite the look that I wanted. I wondered what my mother-in-law would have set her teaset on in 1925. Probably a linen tablecloth or a wooden table or floor. I got out all the old linens, looked through them all, tried the creamer on several, decided I didn't want white on white, and didn't want to iron. I chose the wooden table. It was fun working with the reflection in the wood.

I wanted to continue studying white. My studio used to be our dining room. There are still some remains of a dining room: the china cabinet, the table (now covered with a plastic cloth and my supplies), the chairs (pushed to the side.) In the corner near my easel is my late mother-in-law's high chair. Sitting on the tray is her childhood tea set which she gave to our daughter when she was small. My mother-in-law was born in 1919, s0 the tea set was probably given to her in about 1925. I'm not sure why I didn't pack it up and put it away. But, there it's been, in my peripheral vision, all this time. I've been looking at this nice, little white tea set. Perfect to paint. Fun to paint. The glaze is chipped and worn and there is no longer a perfect dark blue ring around the top. There are four tea cups and saucers, a creamer, a sugar bowl, and a tea pot. I see many future paintings here.
