I've been posting paintings that are from our winter in Mexico.  But, am taking a break to post some done this month since we've been back.  We had the most wonderful house sitter!  This bouquet was sitting on the counter when we came home.  There was another one on the mantel.  It gives you great peace of mind to know you have a well cared for home when you're away.  It's wonderful to come back to a welcoming house.  Not only were there flowers, but there was a basket of Mexican food waiting to be made into a dinner.  And, there was fresh bread, eggs, butter and milk so that we had breakfast the next morning.  That saved a late night trip to the store!  I can't thank our sitter enough!

Gardens & More Art Show

Last summer artists from my plein air group "Garden Artists" were invited to paint in gardens in the annual Fox Garden Tour.  It was a great painting opportunity, as well as a chance to see some beautiful gardens.  Additionally, I met many new people and, as seems to happen everywhere, ran into  friends who I hadn't seen in years.

We thought it would be fun to have a show using this event as a jumping off point.  "Gardens & More"  show cases art work from some of the artists who painted that weekend.  Paintings of any thing garden related, not just from those gardens, are hanging in the gallery.  Hope those of you who live in the Colorado Springs area can stop by Summerland Gardens Upstairs Gallery for the Opening, Friday, April 29th 4 - 7 pm.  Or, visit the gallery any time during the month of May.

Paintings from Mexico

This piece was done in the garden of our hotel in Barra de Potosi, Mexico.  I was very close to the palm so it created a wonderful view looking up.  Palm trees have so many colors in the fronds:  many shades of green, yellow, and oranges as they start to fade away.  

The picture below is actually from a different hotel, but I thought the palms looked like they were also blowing just a bit in the ocean breeze.

Paintings from Mexico

This house was right down the street from our hotel in Barra de Potosi, a little fishing/beach town about 20 minutes south of Zihuatanejo.  (I posted a few other pieces from there in February.)  We walked by this wall every day on the way to the store or the beach.  I loved how there are flowers every where in Mexico.  A beautiful, colorful benefit of living in a warm climate.

Only the main street in Barra de Potosi is paved.

I loved this wall of flowers near the entrance to town.  Maybe a future painting!

Paintings from Mexico

One of the fun and interesting things to do in Oaxaca, and in many Mexican towns, is to visit the markets.  While in Oaxaca we went to many of the local and nearby village markets.  This woman was selling flowers at the Oaxaca Saturday Organic Market.  There were booths of flowers, crafts and clothes.  But my favorite booths were the food.  You could have fresh baked goods for breakfast as well as incredible tacos for lunch.

Paintings from Mexico

This wall was at the church across the street from our hotel in Oaxaca.  I love plein air painting.  I love being out of doors.  But, it has its' challenges:  wind, sun, rain, snow, snakes, bears, bugs, heat, cold, etc.  With this painting I had a new encounter, a funeral.  One afternoon I noticed the beautiful shadows on the garden wall of the church and decided to paint there the next day.  However, when I arrived a funeral was just beginning.  I didn't want to be disrespectful, so decided I'd come back the next afternoon.  That day was beautiful, warm and sunny.  No sooner did I get the piece blocked in than clouds appeared from nowhere.  There was no longer light and shadow.  This little piece required a third session!

Paintings from Mexico

There was a beautiful, sunny roof top terrace on our hotel in Oaxaca, Mexico.  Additionally, there was a covered area with hammocks that was wonderful for afternoon siestas.   Breakfast was eaten at a long, communal table where guests would visit and share stories of their travels and vacations.

Oaxaca is my favorite city in Mexico.  There aren't as many foreigners as in some other towns.  There is still enough old culture that it feels like you're in Mexico.  16 different languages are spoken in the state of Oaxaca.  In the surrounding villages, and often in the city of Oaxaca, you'll hear indigenous people speaking and when you stop and listen, you realize that they're not speaking Spanish.

My husband and I just got back from spending the winter in Mexico.  We love Mexico; we've been there many times.  The last two winters we spent part of each winter there, but this year we decided to stay for the whole winter.  While the winters in Colorado aren't bad compared to many other parts of the country, they're long.  We had a wonderful time!  I posted a few paintings recently.  I'll keep posting more.

We spent a month in mountain colonial towns where the weather was cool, i.e:  you needed a jacket.  The other two months were spent in warm towns, with a few weeks on different beaches.  One thing I loved about the warm weather was all of the flowers.  They were every where:  in gardens, parks, windows and on walls.  This is from a street in Oaxaca, which was my favorite place from the trip.

Sometimes you end up somewhere not because you want to be there, but because you have to stop there to get where you're going.  That was the case here.  This morning plein air piece was done from the balcony of our hotel in Acapulco.  I loved the way the light was shining on the hotels on the main beach.  Acapulco has a bad name due to so many problems.  But, for tourists, it seemed pretty safe.  We stopped there when going further south to the state of Oaxaca.

This flower was in the garden of our hotel in Barra de Potosi, Mexico.  I kept wanting to paint it a bold orange, but it was a peach flower, so I stuck with what I saw.

Barra de Potosi is a small fishing village about 20 minutes south of Zihuatanejo on the Pacific coast.  The town is about 6 square blocks of dirt streets with a few hotels, a few small restaurants, a few tourists.  Interestingly, on the weekends many busses come filled with people from Mexico City (about 3 hours away) who want to spend the day at the beach.  For days I couldn't figure out why there were so many restaurants along the beach and lagoon, and why they all had so many tables when there were maybe 6-8 people at each location.  I later found out.  The town is very quiet and peaceful during the week.

These flowers were growing over the garden wall, from the restaurant next door, of our hotel in Barra de Potosi, Mexico.  The wall shadows changed so quickly, I blocked them in first, didn't change them, and painted the rest from there.

I've painted a lot of beach scenes, but usually palm trees, still water, things that don't move.  This is one of the few times that I've tried painting waves plein air.  Obviously the challenge is the quick movement of the waves.  I blocked in one wave and tried to quickly paint it in even as it rolled back into the sea while I was painting.  I'd wait for the next wave and try to get the colors from there without changing the shape I'd just blocked in.  It was challenging, but actually kind of fun.  I think I'll try another next time we're at the beach.

I got to the beach in the late afternoon on our first day in Barra de Potosi, Mexico.  The sun was headed west, so there wasn't too much shade left for shadows from the tree (they were blocked by other trees) or for me to stand under.  Never the less, there was just enough shade to get paint this piece.  However, there were a lot of no-see-ums!  Still, I love my life!

This is another piece from Puerta Vallarta.  I love the architecture, weather, people, ease of getting there from Colorado.  It's great to walk around and see all of the buildings.  Walking up and down the Malecon (sidewalk area along the beach) is fascinating at any hour of the day.  It's incredible people watching.

These are roof tops from Puerta Vallarta.  I have to say that we love Puerta Vallarta.  While the beaches are not spectacular, the town is wonderful.  It's a combination of old Mexico and tourism.  The town in filled with ex-pats who seem to blend easily with the Mexicans.  It's a wonderful place.  Great weather, lots to do, interesting architecture, quaint.  I can't say enough about it!

This Mexican chair is from our room in Puerta Vallarta.  Again, I love the bright colors used in Mexico.    I think it makes every thing seem happy!  The people all seem so happy;  maybe it's the colors they use.

This is the view from our room in Puerta Vallarta.  I love the bright colors that are so often seen in Mexican architecture.  In Colorado most of the houses are soft earth tones, making a feeling of calmness.  In Mexico the colors are so bright and bold, but just seem to work.

This wall was on Holbox Island, off the northern coast of the Yucatan.  We walked by it everyday.  Of course, depending on the time of day the shadows were always different.  But, no matter what time of day, I stopped and looked at the shadows.  Not sure if it was the shadow shapes, colors, or color of the wall, but it drew me.

These Mexican pots were found here in Colorado Springs at Hillside Gardens.  They are a beautiful garden store and wedding facility that has a wonderful view of Pikes Peak.  There is so much Mexican pottery in every color imaginable that there are path ways which you can walk through the pots!
